letter of the week - #3 - mar 10·2026This week is brought to you by the letter L, and the word luggage. We all carry baggage figuratively and literally through life. It's completely normal — this is how our Creator intricately fashioned us.
Merely walking around a busy airport, you will get a glimpse into loads of individuality. Beat-up backpacks, designer gear, and a plethora of carry-ons. I am a minimal-roller-bag-girl, myself.
Last year, on a weekend trip, my husband and I were met with a 1+ hour wait through security and two redirects, which extended our delay. The Atlanta Plain Train is a must to get from one terminal to another, and with only 15 minutes to spare, we were running to reach final boarding.
Picture this… as we descend to the train platform, we hear, “Please stand clear of the doors. Doors closing." I maneuver my roller bag to try to stop the sliders, only to have the automatic doors shut and seal. My bag and my hand are INSIDE the train. Insert fear and panic 😳. My husband screams, “LET GO!” I release my grip, the bag drops, and my arm retracts seconds before the train speeds off.
I realized something at that moment. What I could NOT control was the movement of time and the masses of people. What I could control was my possessions and my response — concretely and abstractly. So… what luggage am I not willing to release?
Is there hurt, unforgiveness, or grief buried in a side pocket? Are there disappointments, disillusions, or desires stowed in a crevice? Have we overpacked with unrealistic expectations and unrighteous attitudes? What baggage do we need to let go of?
Our history, affections, and personalities are contained in simple clutches as well as sizable duffel bags. We are all transporting what we've lived and who we are. And that is okay — it's what makes us… US. But we can invite God to search us and examine what else we're bringing on the trip.
[Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.]
Psalm 139v23-24
Our adventure in life may include a variety of luggage — the shabby suitcase passed down from grandma and the trendy new tote, but be mindful of when the Lord wants you to let go of what you're carrying. You may not make your flight, but you'll save your soul (and maybe your hand) as He leads you in the way everlasting.
