letter of the week - #15 - june 2·2026

This week is brought to you by the letter S, and the word shepherd. I pondered greatly in using simpler terms like lead or guide. However, I could not get the illustration of Psalm 23 out of my mind. This is a short passage which I recite aloud each morning as I walk into work.

Every. Day. Out. Loud.

It is probably one of the best-known Scriptures, even with unbelievers (at least in part). Yet, because the prose is familiar, it can become flimsy. But truly... it's got some backbone!

I want to remind you — as I do myself — that the Shepherd is the lead character, and He is leading. Jesus is the subject, while being active throughout this profound psalm.

The flock is not only guided by the shepherd's staff, but by his voice. That means He must speak, sing, and even shout to them often. His utterance is intimate, and his cadence is comforting.

[The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
‍ ‍ He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.]
Psalm 23v1-3

This is just a portion, but throughout the whole passage, several things stand out.

  • There is constant movement.
In and out of good seasons and suffering shadows.

  • Pastures, streams, valleys, and tables are evidence of
    provision, affliction, and community.

  • There is a staff that guards and guides,
as well as wake of mercy and grace.

Spend some time reading this entire Psalm. In fact, I challenge you to memorize it and meditate on it daily. The journey to green grass, still waters, and right paths also includes canyons, confrontations, and communion — with friends, enemies, but always the shepherd

He knows the way, so it's essential for us to know His voice. He is leading with confidence, so it's important for us to trust His timing. He delights in our story, so let us follow close and constant.

Send this to at least one friend who needs to be reminded that the Shepherd is leading.
